(a doctor can see 3-5 patients at the surgery in the time it takes him to visit one patient at home). on the telephone: sometimes you may want to speak to a doctor or nurse about something, but do not need to come into the surgery for a face-to-face appointment. pre-bookable telelphone consultations are availble across the week. if you think your problem could be solved by talking to a doctor on the telephone rather than coming to the surgery for an appointment please ask for a telephone consultation and the receptionist will take your number and arrange a time. emergency: during surgery hours please tell the receptionist if your call is urgent. out of hours: if you have an urgent medical need to see a doctor out of normal surgery hours, you can access the out of hours service by ringing the practice number where you will be automatically transferred to the 111 service. alternatively you can ring 111 direct. this service is not for routine appointment or the supply of repeat meedications. out of hours gp services are provided by qualified doctors and nurses. you may receive telephone advice from a doctor or be asked to attend a local primary care centre for an examination. if, for medical reasons, travel is impossible, a home visit from a doctor can be arranged. you should only ring 999 for an ambulance if you think the problem is life threatening or very urgent e.g. collapse, chest pain or breathing difficulties. advice: if you need general healthcare advice at any time, 24 hours a day, you can contact 111 to speak to a trained nurse adviser, or visit practice closure the practice will close between 12 noon and 6.00pm every third thursday of each month for staff training. during this time, any emergency calls will be automatically transferred to the 111 service. if you want to make an appointment with a doctor or nurse, please phone the surgery and speak to a receptionist. we aim to offer an appointment with the gp of your choice (unless it is urgent). we only book routine appointments up to two weeks in advance. for an urgent appointment on the same day, please ring as early as possible. you will be offered the earliest available gp appointment. for most things you can make an appointment with a nurse without seeing the doctor first. although gp appointments are available from 07:00 a.m. tuesday and thursday, reception staff are not available until 08:30 a.m. gp appointment times as follows: monday 08:30 – 11:30, 14:30 – 17:30 tuesday 07:00 – 11:30, 13:00 – 17:30 wednesday 08:30 – 11:30, 14:30 – 17:30 thursday 07:00 – 11:30, 13:00 – 17:30 friday 08:30 – 11:30, 14:30 – 17:30 saturday closed sunday closed online: if you would like to book an appointment on-line please ask the receptionist for details on how to register for this facility. if you are already registered please use the link to the left. wasted appointments recently the government ran a big campaign trying to get people to cancel their nhs appointments if they were not going to be able to make them. the message is – if you can’t keep your appointment, please call us to let us know. keep it or cancel it – don’t waste it! missed appointments cost the nhs thousands of pounds every year. please phone the surgery as soon as possible if you cannot attend. this will help us to make appointments available to as many patients as possible. the practice has a policy to manage the number of wasted appointments. patients who dna (did not attend) appointments are written to. in extreme circumstances patients who repeatedly fail to attend may be removed from the practice list. repeat prescribing we have a computerised system for our prescriptions. if your doctor has authorised a repeat prescription, you will be able to order further supplies by: telephone 0191 2537892 (option 4) between the hours of 1:30 am and 3:30 pm. it is important to say the names of the medication you need and not just ask for a repeat of all your prescriptions. calling into the surgery and ticking the right hand counterfoil of your prescription and place in the “repeat prescription box” at the reception desk. posting your request to us – please include counterfoil from your last prescription ticked with the items you need. if you need us to post your prescription to you please enclose a stamped addressed envelope. if you would like to order prescriptions on-line, please ask the receptionist for details of how to register to use this facility.
